Foreign Language Department Course Descriptions

 

 

German I - The German I curriculum places an emphasis on conversation, listening comprehension, and an understanding of the most basic grammar structures of German, with the major emphasis being on conversation. Vocabulary is presented as it relates to conversational themes.

German II - The German II curriculum places an emphasis on conversation, listening comprehension, and an understanding of intermediate grammar structures of German, with the major emphasis being on conversation. Vocabulary is presented as it relates to conversational themes.

German III - In this level, the students continue to advance in their speaking, reading, listening and writing abilities through more advanced study of grammar and increased vocabulary study. More emphasis is given to German culture through the use of supplementary reading and writing exercises. In addition, German literature will be introduced.

German IV - German IV is the capstone course in the German curriculum. At this level, students are expected to communicate almost entirely in German. Advanced grammar concepts are introduced, and students deepen their understanding of these concepts through oral, written, and listening comprehension activities. Students explore German culture through literature. In addition, the students’ understanding of the cultures of German-speaking countries is exhibited through the use of presentations on a variety of topics using a multimedia approach.

Spanish I - In Spanish I, students will begin to develop a vocabulary base, work on pronunciation and begin a study of grammar. The students will also develop their listening skills in the language. The students will increase their knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world through geography study and cultural activities.

Spanish II - In Spanish II, the major emphasis is on developing the basic language skills; listening, speaking, writing, reading and correct grammar usage. Students will also be given more exposure to the Spanish and Hispanic cultures.

Spanish III - In this level, the students continue to advance in their speaking, reading, listening and writing abilities through more advanced study of grammar and increased vocabulary study. More emphasis is given to Hispanic culture through the use of supplementary reading and writing exercises.

Spanish IV - In this course students continue with an advanced intermediate study of grammar and vocabulary while improving their speaking, reading, writing and listening skills through a variety of activities.
