Greetings
I’m sort of sloppy when I eat and often I get stains on
my clothes. Some of them come out: some of them don’t. Sometimes
the stain causes me to toss the piece of clothing. More often I
convince myself that one of the following factors make wearing
the stain acceptable:
- No one will see it
- If they see it they won’t care
- If they care they might
give me the benefit of the doubt and believe that the stain is
fresh.
- They have stains of their own and understand my chewing
challenge
I guess you can see that I am deluding myself. People
see our stains. They make judgments about us by the stains they
see. They judge us by how we deal with our stains. They judge
us by the number of times we display the stains.
It is interesting that the One who created us has a plan to remove
the implications of our stains. The One who created us and has
the most cause to be offended by our stain provides us with a
fresh white robe every day of our lives. God encourages us to
admit to the mess that we have made and take advantage of His
powerful stain remover, Jesus Christ.
Instead of hiding or ignoring
our stain, God calls on us to change into the white robe of purity
that has been earned by His Son for us. This is the Good News
for someone who is as sloppy as I am.
School News
Sunday, April 27 is a big day around here. We will be inviting
members of the class of 2012 and our 2007 donors to join us for
two separate pre-theater events. After the matinee performance
of “Singin’ in the Rain” we will recognize the
service of three long time Walther professionals. Mrs. Shirley
Beveridge and Mr. Steve Zielke will be honored for 25 and 30 years
of service to Lutheran Education. Mr. Don Gillingham will celebrate
30 years at Walther. We would love to have you with us. If you
need more information contact our school office at 708.344.0404.
While the upcoming musical will showcase the dramatic and musical
skills of some of our students, there’s a pretty active art
department keeping busy under the guiding eye of Mr. Jeff Carnehl.
Three freshman girls created resurrection butterflies for our chapel
altar. Pictured below holding their creations are (left to right)
Nikki Cummuta, Erika Bredehoft and Alex Cummuta.

Congratulations to our seniors who are making college plans. We
received word today that ten of our seniors have been offered monetary
academic scholarships to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana.
We have also had students offered full ride scholarships to Southern
Illinois University and University of Chicago and these are just
a the few we know about at this early stage of the game.
A major part of the Walther Experience is the satisfaction you
get from being involved. That is the spirit that drives us to host
a theater group each summer. The group, led by former Walther teacher
Dr. Mike Meyer, would love to have you join in on the project.
Mike even sent us this note…
Tuesday's Child announces its
summer production of “Annie” by
Charles Strouse. The show will be presented at Walther Lutheran
High School on the weekends of July 19 and 25. There will be
evening performances on Friday and Saturday and a matinee on
Sunday. We are seeking actors and actresses for the lead roles
of Annie, Oliver Warbucks, Miss Hannigan, Rooster Hannigan, Lily
St. Regis and Grace Farrell. We are also casting for the chorus
of Hooverville residents, the Warbuck’s servants and NYC
citizens. Remember the fun you had on stage or in the orchestra
pit? It can be yours again! We need help with other areas as
well: tickets, programs, set painting and properties. If you
are interested, give a shout and tell us what you would like
to do. Tryouts will take place April 13 at Grace Lutheran School,
7300 Division Street in River Forest, in the seminar Room from
1 to 5 p.m. There will also be auditions on April 15 and 16 from
7 to 9:30 p.m. Times may be scheduled by calling me at 773-622-5783
or writing mjonmeyer@gmail.com. There may be callbacks on Thursday
of the same week.
Walther’s best possible future is that of providing a strong
resource for families who desire to have Christ in their lives
and to the Lutheran congregations throughout our regional service
area. We have developed a partnership with the people of Bethel
Lutheran Church in Chicago and we are happy to provide this link
to a WGN story that features one of the church’s programs
serving area residents and one of the people involved in making
a difference, click here
Walther supports many effort to fund Cancer research. On Sunday
April 13, 2008 Sox fans can go to the Cell with the Broncos and
half of the $17 ticket price will go to the Avon Walk for Cancer
fund. Contact the office if you want more information.
Alumni News
While in Florida with our Bronco baseball team, I was able to
visit with Al Guemmer ‘59 a practicing attorney and avid
Cub fan. We had a great conversation about the need for developing
a fitness mindset and keeping ourselves positioned to work as servants
extending the Kingdom of God wherever we are planted.
On April 1 we received a notice that a 70s grad had attempted
to make a $5,000 contribution online but the transaction failed.
This happens sometimes because of the size of the gift. Our staff
tried to track down what would have been the first gift from this
grad. Then we remembered that the date presented the possibility
that someone was pulling our leg. But then…we got an email
from generous alumnus who was sitting at his desk when the Spirit
came over him to do “something” for Walther. The result
is a check for $5,000 and a number of very happy people. You can
make gifts of most sizes online when the Spirit comes over you,
and you can make a gift of any size at any time through the mail
or by stopping in our office. We’d love to hear from you
- no foolin’.
God’s blessings
