Greetings
There is something about a day-long rain. The drops seem to be finer; the mist and drizzle are somehow comforting. The steady pace provides a sense of security. I believe that I can see the rain soaking into the ground and the flowers and grass rising up just as you have seen in countless cartoons.
I never want to have a baseball game rained out, but the day-long rain establishes a setting for a day-off that is lost in a violent storm. The crashing of thunder and the flash of lightning as black clouds roll across the sky creates a feeling of awe and perhaps a touch of fear.
How can two things with so little in common share the name "rain"? And yet we have extremes in our moods and in our personality. The world calls us to practice the flash and embrace the hype. Still our lives are affected by the quiet forces that are with us day after day and over the years.
God Himself, the author of the rain, approaches us in both ways. His power and might is obvious in the majestic world He created for us. His patience and tenderness is proven over the millennium as He works His perfect will in the lives of His people. I pray that you find comfort in His ever present love and that you see the majesty of His plan for your life.

This week acclaimed professional artist Timm Etters began to paint one of his signature murals on our gym's north wall. It is an amazing air brush process. You may just want to stop by and see it as it happens. The work should continue Tuesday through Friday from now until about May 23.
On Thursday, May 15, Walther classes will be held in a variety of locations as we put ourselves to work on the fifth annual Christian Service Day. Students will work for grade schools, a women's shelter, a local hospital and other places where the general public is served by community institutions. The work matters, but the motivation for our work matters more. Christian people, who have been bought for a price they could never pay, show their gratitude by serving others and demonstrating the power of God to transform our lives. (Click here to see pictures from Christian Service Day 2007.)
Join us at a dinner to honor our National Champion Junior Engineering and Technological Society (JETS) team members. The event will be held on Sunday, May 25, at 5 p.m. at Tom's Steak House. The cost of tickets is $20.00. This year's JETS team is the first group of Walther students to earn a National Title.
Graduation is set for June 1, 2008, and you are invited. This year's speaker is Manny Pyka, M.D., Class of '81. Dr Pyka will have his name added to the list of Walther Top Grads. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m., and there will be a reception for Alumni after the newest graduates have left the building. Those in attendance will see our new mural and the National Championship banner.

This Sunday, May 11, as Mother's Day winds down, turn your television to Comcast SportsNet Chicago at 7 p.m. and see Tug Gillingham '00 and all of the members of the South Georgia Peanuts in a series that has fun with minor league baseball. The star of the show is the supercharged former New York Met Wally Backman, manager of the team. This is the first of the episodes of "Playing for Peanuts." If you are outside of the Chicago area, click here to check out the national listings for the show.
Kip Pygman '01 is a Business Education teacher at Leyden East High School in Franklin Park, IL. He's been having some health struggles of late and his church, St. Paul Lutheran in Brookfield (9035 Grant Ave.) is having a "Flip for Kip" pancake breakfast and bake sale on Saturday, May 24, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Walther received the following update from Kip...
First of all, thank you for your concern.
I had been experiencing a few symptoms within the last few months that I felt were getting progressively worse. I checked them out with my general physician a month ago, and he ordered an MRI be done. After seeing the results, they found a rare brain tumor (1 in 100,000 people) which has been slowly growing over time the last 10 years.
I am blessed in that the tumor found is benign and the doctor I will be seeing is one of the best in the nation for this type of procedure. He has performed over 1,000 of these surgeries and I am in great hands!
I am scheduled for surgery June 19 at Loyola Hospital. I am confident in a full recovery and being back in the classroom teaching by the start of the next school year.
Please say hello for me to all at Walther and let everyone know that things are going to work out just fine! Thank you again for your thoughts!
