Dear
Parent,
I
hope
your
summer
is
going
well!
Last
week
I
was
in
Delbarton,
West
Virginia
with
16
members
from
Immanuel
Lutheran
Church's
youth
group.
Included
in
our
group
were
my
wife,
two
other
adult
leaders
and
9
Walther
students.
What
an
experience!
Delbarton
is
a
town
of
435
people.
I
was
surprised
at
how
many
dogs
were
walking
the
streets
of
this
small
town.
In
years
past
Delbarton
was
a
booming
coal-mining
town.
Today
coal
is
mined
in
the
mountains
all
around
them,
but
many
of
the
local
community
are
unemployed.
Poverty
is
prevalent
in
this
beautiful
Appalachian
Mountain
setting.
Our
total
group
of
about
70
was
comprised
of
high
school
students
from
Kentucky,
Wisconsin,
and
Indiana
to
work
on
three
different
projects.
Students
scraped
and
painted
the
former
health
department
building
recently
given
to
the
city
to
become
a
new
city
hall.
Another
group
ran
"Kids
Camp"
for
Delbarton's
youth,
picked
up
garbage
in
the
community,
and
visited
a
nursing
home.
Kid's
Camp
students
planned
activities,
performed
skits,
worked
crafts,
and
were
matched
up
with
"buddies"
to
share
their
faith
and
make
new
friends.
Another
group
worked
at
a
private
home
in
the
community
where
we
completely
rebuilt
a
kitchen
floor
that
had
been
rotted
out
from
outside
rain
because
of
gutters
in
poor
condition
and
sink
water
damage
from
their
sink
draining
directly
into
the
floor
and
the
dirt
ground
below.
The
rotted
outside
kitchen
wall
was
also
rebuilt.
The
people
we
served
in
our
four
days
of
work
at
our
projects
were
very
welcoming
and
extremely
appreciative
of
our
efforts.
Strong
friendships
were
developed.
We
experienced
the
joy
of
helping
others.
We
grew
spiritually
through
the
daily
study
of
God's
Word.
Students
in
our
group
talked
about
the
experiences
they
had
on
this
trip
as
life
changing.
Clearly
God
used
this
as
not
only
a
blessing
for
the
community
we
served,
but
enriched
our
lives
with
His
blessings
through
our
service
and
study
as
well.
Plans
are
underway
to
do
a
similar
trip
next
year.
Perhaps
your
son,
daughter
or
you
will
be
a
part
of
this
experience?
How's
your
Spanish?
Mrs.
Rogina
Ruffin
is
available
to
tutor
students
in
Spanish.
Perhaps
a
summer
refresher,
remedial
help,
or
the
learning
of
new
concepts
is
what
you
are
looking
for.
She
will
also
be
available
during
the
school
year
as
a
part
of
a
new
tutoring
program
we
are
in
the
process
of
developing.
You
can
contact
Mrs.
Ruffin
directly
at
(708)
204-9252.
The
initial
half
hour
of
summer
tutoring
is
free.
Tutoring
I
am
looking
for
qualified
adults
that
may
be
available
to
tutor
students
during
the
school
year.
If
you
are
interested
in
this
opportunity
to
serve
others
please
let
me
know.
