Freshman Transition Tips for Students and their Parents
-
Be interested and enthusiastic about their move to high school
-
Attend Back to School Night on September 5, 2007, 7 p.m.
-
Help your child develop good study habits. Try to provide them somewhere private and quiet to study. Help your child set aside a particular time to study.
-
Practice organizational skills. In the first weeks of school you might want to check with your child that they have the right books for the following day. You will quickly encourage a good habit.
-
Keep communication open. Make sure that they know you're available if things go wrong.
-
Help your child set priorities. The expectations and responsibilities of high school will be quite different than middle school. As more and more responsibility falls on their shoulders, help your child evaluate the levels of importance they place upon their academic requirements versus social activities.

Freshman students take the EXPLORE test in the fall. This test is given during the regular school day at Walther. The EXPLORE test is designed to help 9th graders explore a broad range of options for their future. EXPLORE prepares students not only for their high school coursework, but for their post-high school choices as well.
