Walther Lutheran senior Gabe Arevalos had never attempted a game-winning field goal until Saturday when his 20-yarder with 36 seconds left propelled the Broncos to a 23-20 victory at Immaculate Conception.
"I was a little nervous, but I didn't even look up after I kicked it. I knew it was good," said Arevalos, who missed 50- and 46-yarders earlier. "I knew it was going to be up to me when we passed midfield, and I was ready for it."
With the game tied 20-20, the Broncos (2-0) drove 72 yards in 10 plays to set up the game-winning kick.
Nine of the plays were runs, an unexpected turn of events because Walther finished with only 39 rushing yards on 36 carries and its three touchdowns came on Steve Watson scoring tosses of 74, 49 and 55 yards.
"That just shows that we have many dimensions as an offense," said Watson, who finished 11 of 18 for 303 yards. "It makes it harder for other teams to stop us."
Immaculate Conception fell to 1-1.
