WALTHER SENIOR FROM BERKELEY RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE

Jasmyne McDonald, senior, of Berkeley, has been honored with a President's Volunteer Service Award.


Walther Lutheran High School released news that senior Jasmyne McDonald of Berkeley has been has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Gail Grebasch, Director of Walther’s Guidance Office, calls Jasmyne a “gifted young woman who has the drive and dedication to be successful.” “She’s smart, savvy, intelligent and competent, with a desire to use her God-given talents to better the world around her,” said Walther Public information Coordinator Lori Solyom, who has supervised McDonald in an independent media internship.

Jasmyne McDonald participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Walther Lutheran High School. Outside of Walther’s walls, she has taught and cared for children in park district preschool, gymnastic and dance classes, her community swimming pool, the public library, tutoring programs and at the local Boys and Girls Club7. “This involvement in the community and reaching out to the world at large is part of what we teach and model for our students at Walther,” added Solyom, emphasizing the school’s heavy focus on service within the Walther arena, at area churches, in a chosen vocation and in the civic realm.

At school, McDonald is an involved student and academically recognized. In addition to being named a finalist in The National Achievement® Scholarship Program and appearing on the Principal’s List Honor Roll, Jasmyne is in National Honor Society, and she is a Walther Scholar. She is a Student Council representative, varsity cheerleader, editor of the yearbook, on the staffs of the newspaper and literary magazine, competes in forensics and WYSE (World Youth Science and Engineering), appears in Who’s Who Among American High School Students and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities. The awards are sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Walther Lutheran High School is a co-educational Christian school located at 9th and Chicago in Melrose Park.
