Walther Lutheran High School senior Christian Thompson of Chicago made the Broncos proud as he won the IHSA (Illinois High School Association) Three Point Showdown on Friday, March 7, at Peoria’s Carver Arena. Chris shot ten three-point baskets to win the statewide competition. He advanced to the final four after shooting ten three-pointers on Thursday and then seven in a tie-breaker shoot out.
When Thompson was congratulated upon his return from Peoria, he was somewhat subdued. “I really should have made thirteen,” the self-effacing State Champion shooter said, shaking his head. “I hit thirteen shots in practice all last week.”
Thompson’s teammate, Walther junior Jonathan White of Chicago, also qualified for the downstate dunk shot competition.
The Walther Bronco boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each won the regular season Private School League championship and took home the IHSA Regional Championship Titles. The girls also won the PSL tournament crown and took 1st place in the prestigious University of Chicago High School Thanksgiving Tournament. The PSL victory was especially sweet because the conference title has eluded Walther’s Lady Broncos since 1984, despite consecutive Elite Eight State Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. Seniors Jazzmyn Harvey of Bellwood and Shanelle Wright of Chicago, and junior Dominique White of Bellwood, received PSL 1st Team All-Conference honors and Coach Todd Fisher was named Girls’ Basketball PSL Coach of the Year. The boys were represented on the PSL All-Conference Team by Thompson, along with senior Cedric Collins of Oak Park. Coach Robert Koehne was the Boys’ Basketball PSL Coach of the Year.
Walther Lutheran High School is a co-educational Christian school located at 9th and Chicago in Melrose Park. The school has an enrollment of just over 400 students from fifty-seven different Chicago area zip codes.
