Miss Emily Muther

The Muther girls are women of ministry. “Every Mrs. Muther is a Lutheran school teacher,” says Emily Muther, lay minister and newest member of the Walther faculty. Her younger sister is a Director of Christian Education student at Concordia University Chicago. Her older married sister is a Director of Christian Education married to a science teacher. Emily's mother is one of three Mrs. Muthers listed on the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod roster of commissioned educators. “Not the guys,” she smiles. “My dad's in maintenance and my brother is in construction.”

Muther is a part of Walther's newly enhanced Religion Department. The Green Bay native comes to Walther by way of Camp Perkins near Ketchum, Idaho, where she has served as a camp counselor since graduating from Concordia University Chicago with a degree in lay ministry and theology.

Emily's two day road trip from Idaho left her tired but ready to face the challenges of a new home and job. “I am looking forward to teaching the young people here,” Muther shares. “Kids get so excited about stuff,” she explains. “You don't always know what's in their head. At camp I worked with children in 3rd grade through high school. One little boy told me, ‘In another world I'm a dragon and I will live forever.' After an intense prayer session another child said, ‘I understand why God has to let the devil out of his cell every 1000 years.' You have to be prepared for anything. Emily Muther finds that preparation in scripture. Her favorite verses are Proverbs 3:5-6 [“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”] and Proverbs 31:30 [“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”].

She's an avid sports enthusiast but surprisingly not a huge Packers fan. Muther loves to watch soccer and participate in track. Her specialties are distance running and throwing the javelin. She sings, plays piano, organ, bass guitar and percussion. Her favorite film is “Ella Enchanted” and being outdoors is one of her top-ranked pastimes.

Muther is teaching Freshman Religion classes at Walther and is working with the youth at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, St. John Lutheran Church in Forest Park and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Melrose Park. She plans to help youth integrate church with family and her goal is to “help relationships reflect Christ in the lives of all these young people."
