What do you think of when you hear Thanksgiving?
Do you see a turkey? Maybe some Mashed Potatoes?
Some apple pie?
Or maybe some football?
Whatever it is, it probably has nothing to do with the actual reason why we have Thanksgiving. When the pilgrims had the "first Thanksgiving", they gave thanks to God for the blessings of the past year. Despite the rough times they had suffered, the Pilgrims recognized how God had given them everything they had. In Psalm 95, verses 1-6, it says,
1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
3 For the Lord is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
This Thanksgiving, lets set aside some time and give thanks to God for how he has blessed us and given us all that we have.
Let us pray: Dear God, thank you for your continual blessings. Please help us to be mindful of how blessed we are and to always remember what Thanksgiving is all about. Amen.
